It’s been a while since we received an album from Baby Keem. Right when people were starting to question him and his careerBaby Keem suddenly started rolling out Ca$ino very recently. Before I knew it, the release day had arrived. I like Baby Keem but also wouldn’t say I’m his biggest fan, so I went into this with few expectations and ready to dig into this album fairly.

My main criticism of Baby Keem is that at times he reminds me too much of Kendrick Lamar—both vocally and stylistically. There’s a bunch of young artists inspired by and starting to grow from Kendrick’s roots. I always give them their flowers, but I also always say it’s important to separate and distinguish yourself. I do think Baby Keem comes with musical differences, but he still has this Kendrick sound that runs as a thread throughout. It doesn’t help being so attached to Kendrick; the comparisons are even easier to find.

Ironically, the songs where I felt like Baby Keem was in his own musical lane were also some of my least favorites, with Dramatic Girl being the main standout in that instance. $ex Appeal is a track I like, but to an extent, it falls into a similar category. He gets into more of an alternate sound which stood out, but they also weren’t songs I loved. Lyrically, I like what Keem says and dives into on Ca$ino; it’s a good blend of content. It ranges from simpler stuff, like on the aforementioned $ex Appeal, to much deeper themes throughout other tracks. I just want a bit more to make Baby Keem stand out as his own artist.

Ca$inoBirds & the BeesGood FlirtsHouse Money, and Circus Circus Free$tyle are all my favorite songs here. Even when Baby Keem reminds me of someone like Kendrick on a track, it’s in a positive way. That beat for Ca$ino had to grow on me, but once it clicked, it fit. The production across this album is good but, again, gives me very familiar vibesHouse Money has a great beat and Baby Keem comes with a rapid-fire flow. I feel a similar sentiment for Circus Circus Free$tyle. Personally, I have Birds & the Bees as my initial favorite off the album, but I could see that changing with time, especially once summer rolls around.

For me, this album and version of Baby Keem reminds me too much of Kendrick. I think I like the album more than The Melodic Blue musically, but it also maybe has less of a unique personality. He is a great artist to follow in the shoes of, and one that I love. But like all young artists that have a style that reminds me of K Dot, I always say: utilize the spirit, but pave your own lane. There can only be one Jordan, one LeBron, one Jay-Z. Follow the path, be influenced, but separate.

Standout Tracks: Birds & the Bees, Good Flirt, House Money & Circus Circus Freestyle
