‘Absence and Persistence’: Why Connie Roses’ Latest is Worth the Spin

Connie Roses comes out of Pittsburgh. He’s brand new to me, but I was fortunate enough to get an early look at his latest album, Absence and Persistence. It’s an interesting project packed with a variety of styles and sounds throughout. While I gravitate toward some of these sounds more than others, it’s clear this music has a reach much wider than just my own ears. Let me explain.
As happens sometimes when reviewing, Connie Roses showcases a rap style that can be hit or miss for me—sometimes it comes down to the flow, and other times it’s the rhyme scheme. His approach reminds me of several big artists, both upcoming and established, and I think he can definitely carve out a lane and find success with it. I’ll add that Connie brings a melodic element to the table that I’m actually really into. Technically speaking, I often found myself enjoying his vocals and melodies even more than his raps.
Lyrically, I like what Connie does across this album. He never tries to force a persona; his lyrical content and style perfectly match who he comes across as naturally. There’s a positive, uplifting energy here that the production plays into and supports incredibly well. Songs like “Blues,” “Guide,” “Favors,” “Father Father,” and “Aerials” hold some of my favorite moments on the entire project.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but it’s one I honestly didn’t mind keeping on repeat while reviewing it. Sometimes a mixed bag leans negative, but in this case, I definitely lean positive. If you enjoy Teller Bank$, who makes a guest appearance here, I think you’ll enjoy Connie Roses—and you’ll especially love “Blues.” Like I said, this drops today, so give it a spin and form your own opinion!
