Album Review: Zaytoven – Zaytoven’s Freshman Class

Zaytoven’s Latest Project: A Mixed Bag of Talent

Reviewed By: Marquis “Southside_Gunn” Harris

Zaytoven, a pioneering figure in the hip-hop landscape, has been instrumental in shaping the sound of modern trap music. With a career spanning over two decades, he has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, from Gucci Mane to Usher, and has consistently pushed the boundaries of production. Known for his signature style that combines intricate melodies with hard-hitting beats, Zaytoven has made a lasting impact not only as a producer but also as an artist in his own right. Now, with Freshman Class, he’s stepping back into the spotlight, ready to showcase a new generation of talent.

With this project, we have our typical producer featuring a heavy lineup of guest artists. Featured on this project are a ton of different artists, such as Zayskii, Rich Baby, and Slump6s. With these types of projects, you have to be willing to accept that you’re going to encounter varying levels of rapping skill and a somewhat predictable level of quality when it comes to production.

Zaytoven is a legend in the game, but over the years, his production sound has become very repetitive. On this project, you can hear elements of melodic tap, alongside some trap sounds. Some of these tracks evoke a 2012 mixtape vibe, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, the project feels dated.

Although some verses are somewhat good, the songs are so vastly different that you often feel confused due to the lack of consistency. It’s not a bad listen, but it could be much better.
