EP Review: Mick Jenkins – Type Sh*t

Mick Jenkins’ ‘Type Shit’: An Industry Rebellion

Reviewed By: Tory “Pico_Da_Gawd” Jackson

Mick Jenkins is no stranger to dropping high-quality projects without a heads-up. “Type Shit,” an EP completely made with “Mick Jenkins type beats” found on YouTube, is no slouch in the discography. Everything from the title to how it was released was done with the intention of making a loud statement: that statement being, fuck the industry and the rules they expect you to follow. Give the power of the art back to the artist!

“Type Shit” is only available for purchase for $20 on the “Even” platform at the time of writing this review. Some may view this as a negative, especially since you’re only getting five songs, but when it comes to art, there are no rules, which is the point. This strategy isn’t anything new and has been successfully done in the past, but Mick using non-mainstream producers kicks it up another notch. It gives people hustling at home and making “type” beats a glimpse of what can happen when the right person comes across their work. It also frees everyone involved from the chains of the streaming industry—another power move for the producers involved.

As mentioned earlier, the project is short, sweet, and to the point. “I be in these meetings they be offering me bullshit.” You can hear light jabs toward the industry throughout the project. Docent, one of only two producers featured, does a good job providing the perfect smooth contrast to the raw raps from Mick. This formula gives the sense of that classic movie scene involving a mobster making threats while something classy like Marvin Gaye plays in the background. It was cool to see Stoic listed for production again too, following his run with Doechii. The vibe he and Docent created was a formula that worked and was fitting for the points Mick was trying to get across.
