Album Review: The Weeknd – Hurry Up Tomorrow

Exploring The Weeknd’s Last Musical Journey

Reviewed By: Marquis “Southside_Gunn” Harris

All good things must come to an end. For someone who has been making music consistently for more than a decade, we have received what is the last official record under “The Weeknd” name. Most artists somewhat phone it in with their final project, simply looking for a cash grab, while Abel has taken the opposite route. He has embraced storytelling, being open and honest as he comes to grips with himself and the world around him.

In wrestling, we always say that “Everything is Connected.” The Weeknd has leaned into that concept, with the entire project feeling like one cohesive song, as well as being the conclusion of his journey. For true fans, the final track, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” actually crossfades and flows seamlessly into the first track he ever made, “High for This.” This clever production choice sparks curiosity, inviting listeners to revisit his entire catalog from the very beginning.

The production on this album is primarily Hip Hop and Synth-Pop based, with some clear, slowed, methodical R&B influences mixed in as well. Essentially, it combines elements from the two albums of his second trilogy, After Hours and Dawn F.M. The choice of features is interesting; the inclusion of Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, and Lana Del Rey is effective, but Future feels out of place here. His inability to sing detracts from the listening experience, making his contributions quite jarring.

The vocals throughout the album are consistent and smooth, while the subject matter is both dark and eye-opening. The strong pop influence showcases how far he has strayed from his original roots, yet he still manages to craft hits and create solid tracks with memorable moments. There are a lot of beat switches, and a few tracks slightly overstay their welcome, but it’s still a great way to exit if this is truly going to be his last project.
