Album Review: Ransom & Dave East – The Final Call

Soulful Lyricism and Storytelling

By: Malik the Villain

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect going into this project, but damn was I impressed. Starting off, you’re welcomed with a smooth soul sample plus cutthroat lyricism from Ransom and Dave East. If you want some storytelling with soul sampling or are just a hip-hop head into nothing but straight lyricism, then this is definitely a project that’s catered for you. With this being their first collaboration, these two delivered with not a single miss throughout the whole album. When I say I had the stank face listening to this, I mean that shit. Method Man’s verse on “BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY” was so crazy that it just proves that it doesn’t matter how old you are; as long as you can deliver an amazing verse and still flow without sounding washed, then age is irrelevant.

Other features like Jay Electronica, 22Gz, Abby Jasmine, and Jadin Alexander definitely did their part, contributing to the amazing vibe of this project. The production and lyrical aspects are a no-brainer because, as I said, this had my head bobbing with both elements making this project what it is. The samples and verses from both East and Ransom never felt boring or mediocre; they were, in fact, the complete opposite. Overall, this album is one of those works that warrant a strong conversation for possibly being in the Top 10 of the year so far. After further listening, I need these two artists to collab again. Hopefully, they do in the future because, Sheesh.

The chemistry between Ransom and Dave East is palpable throughout the record, demonstrating that they have a deep understanding of each other’s strengths and styles. Tracks like “AUDUBON BALLROOM” and “AL KABIR BEACH” exemplify their ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate emotionally with listeners. The smooth production provides a perfect backdrop for their lyrical prowess, enhancing the overall listening experience. In a hip-hop landscape that often feels oversaturated, this collaboration stands out as a refreshing reminder of the genre’s roots and its capacity for storytelling. Their seamless interplay and distinct voices make “The Final Call” not just an album, but an event in East Coast hip-hop, one that fans will be discussing for months to come.
