Will Smith’s Bold Return
By: Marquis “Southside Gunn” Harris

Yes, you read that correctly—Will Smith has dropped an album in the year 2025! What’s even crazier is that he actually curses on this project. If you know Will, you know he typically avoids profanity in his music; refer to Family Guy for that reference.
In “Based on a True Story,” Will uses this album as a platform to flex on everyone while also being very open about his life. This approach is refreshing, especially considering the headlines surrounding him for many years. He provides us with a deep look into his perspective, acknowledging the outside noise along the way. The album also has a spiritual dimension, as there are numerous references to his Christian faith.
Another notable aspect is how Will adapts his flow to match his features when they’re present on a track. The songs featuring Big Sean and Joyner Lucas fit perfectly, with a particularly great cadence in the collaboration with Jaden and Russ. The album showcases a variety of sounds, incorporating heavy bass, Spanish influences, and gospel elements. Much like his acting career, this variety highlights his multifaceted talent.
Honestly, it’s not a bad listen overall. Personally, I could have done without B. Simone’s contribution, but that’s just me nitpicking. Overall, while the album isn’t likely to win a Grammy, as Will himself noted, it is indeed a solid listen.
