Album Review: Kevin Gates – I’m Him 2

Growth and Familiarity

Text in a bold art style saying 'By: Marquis "Southside Gunn" Harris' with a small profile picture of a person.
A person stands in a dimly lit room, looking at a mirror that reflects an image of another person dressed in casual attire. The room has debris scattered on the floor and shelves in the background.

A sequel to his 2019 release, this album is full of introspective lyrics, some hard beats (to any extent), and reflective narratives over 11 tracks and 33 minutes. To be pretty candid, it’s not special, but it’s not trash either.

The project is almost too cohesive, as a few of the tracks blend together so seamlessly that you may forget you’re listening to a different song. One thing that cannot be taken away from Kevin is that he raps with passion, and he attempts to vocalize his lyrics to effectively convey his message. However, another issue is that the album is essentially more of the same. While in certain cases that’s not always bad, this time it feels very pedestrian.

Despite these concerns, there are standout moments worth noting. A few tracks showcase Kevin’s growth as an artist, revealing glimpses of experimentation with different sounds or themes that could hint at more artistic development in the future. While the album may tread familiar ground, the spark of creativity occasionally shines through, offering a glimmer of hope for what he might deliver next.

The album has emotional moments for its fans and melodic elements for those who enjoy that, but all in all, this album serves more as background music than anything else.
