Album Review – Lefty Gunplay – Can’t Get Right

Capitalizing on momentum

A tattooed individual wearing a baseball cap points a blurred object at the camera, seated on a floral-patterned couch against a plain wall.

This is definitely a true west coast project. Lefty is building on his hype and momentum after his feature verse on GNX. With that, we are getting a project with some true West Coast bops, smooth raps and some witty wordplay.

The production is very bouncy, very lively and full of nice drums. While it has similar sounds throughout, the album itself has been able to capture the feel of different sounds while not actually using different sounds.

Bar wise, Lefty isn’t a top lyricist, but what he is able to do with his bars allows him to walk in his own lane and find his bag. The features on this album are good as well. There are some features that take control of the tracks and that’s a good thing as it helps them stand out as well.

Compared to his other work, this project offers some potential for Lefty to build on. He seems to be progressing as an artist and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain that trajectory.

Overall, this project encapsulates the essence of the West Coast sound while also pushing Lefty’s artistry forward. His unique blend of charm and charisma shines through each track, making it clear that he is not just riding the wave of his previous successes but actively carving out his niche. The infectious energy of the production, coupled with Lefty’s laid-back yet engaging delivery, invites listeners to kick back and enjoy the ride. While he may not deliver intricate bar-heavy verses, his approach to storytelling and rhythm feels refreshing in a scene often dominated by complex lyricism. Each track serves as a testament to his evolving style, showcasing a balance between fun and introspection that keeps audiences coming back for more. As Lefty continues to hone his craft, fans and newcomers alike will be eager to see how he further develops this promising direction in future projects. It’s a solid listen and worthy of a few replays.
