Album Review – Jay Worthy – Burnout 5

Bendin corner bangers

A red convertible Ford car driving on a highway with movement captured in the background and a stadium visible in the distance.

Jay Worthy is like a machine when it comes to putting together good EP’s, and his latest drop is no exception. Coming in at about 11 minutes, Burnout 5 is the perfect project to go spin the block and show off the whip to.

The way it was put together with Faizon Love, aka Big Worm, makes it damn near flawless. The production, in combination with the calls from Big Worm, keeps the same energy going without skipping a beat and gives it that “Friday” vibe. “I didn’t want to be Smokey; shit, I wanted to be like Big Worm.” That’s the point Worthy is trying to get across with this project, and he accomplishes that in a short period of time, which is pretty impressive.

“Calamari” is the first thing you hear when you press play, and it starts with Big Worm telling you that your parents can’t help you get out of street politics. Smooth production from LNDN DRGS comes in right after, and the sample used is perfect and creates a scene for the rest of the project. It felt like every beat used on this could have been playing in the background of Menace 2 Society or any other 90’s gangster movie.

Add in features like Daz Dillinger on “Bad Bitch,” and it just makes the whole vibe of the EP sound like summertime on the West Side. The project captures a moment in time and paints a pretty good picture quickly. It does what an EP is supposed to do, keep it short and memorable. No lyrical miracle raps or deep thoughts. Just good music.
