Album Review – Gripz – The Offering Plate

Gun Bars Galore

Gripz’ The Offering Plate displays his wicked bars and similarly wicked voice once again. He stays with the aggression bar after bar and I rock with it.

Gripz Battle Rap background stays on display. I’m not sure I’ve heard someone get into as much crazy gun talk on an album as Gripz does on Offering Plate, but I really enjoy it. With his quick flow and unique voice, things come together nicely to make some really interesting verses and songs. Not an MC you will fall asleep listening to by any means.

At 30 minutes, everytime I put this on it flys by. The dark production ushers each song along, filled with villainous content. Some of my favorite tracks are ReLoad, Forever Cooking, 76 Tombstones, Drama & Desperate Measures. If you’re engaged in the battle rap scene, you will certainly appreciate the wordplay, cadence switches and metaphors.

Gripz continues to move up. Recently, he had a feature on a Hus KingPin project and the more he churns out like this and Crucifix Cartridges, the more he’ll keep establishing himself in the dark east coast Hip-Hop scene.

We all know that being able to battle rap doesn’t always translate to palatable songs. The urge to make lyrics as technically complicated as possible is one that most battle rappers can’t avoid when making actual tracks.

There’s a difficult tightrope to teeter for these types of artists to get any commercial traction. To be fair, most of them don’t really care and do it for the love of the game, and the purists who appreciate that take it for what it is. Gripz was able to slightly simplify his lyrical approach to make some solid songs without abandoning complexity in itself.

Standout Tracks: ReLoad, Forever Cooking, 76 Tombstones, Drama & Desperate Measures
