Legacy and Relevance: Raekwon’s Return to Form

Album Review: The Emperor’s New Clothes by Raekwon
It’s impressive how Raekwon has managed to age gracefully within the rap industry. With a keen ear for music, he has crafted street-level boom-bap tracks that don’t sound outdated at all. There are so many positive moments that you might not even notice some of the hiccups.
Firstly, the album is very narrative-driven, cohesive, and places emphasis on craftsmanship rather than more experimental sounds. If you’re a fan of storytelling, you’re going to appreciate the signature sounds and bars that Raekwon is known for. His vivid imagery and attention to detail create immersive narratives that resonate with listeners.
The album features notable shoutouts and contributions from fellow Wu-Tang members: Inspectah Deck, Method Man, and Ghostface, the latter of whom appears on three tracks. The inclusion of the Griselda collective and Nas adds an extra layer of depth and street credibility. Each feature is well-crafted and unique, showcasing the strengths of each artist while contributing to the overall vibe of the album.
However, the album does have moments of complacency, and at times, the energy feels inconsistent. Some tracks, while enjoyable, don’t carry the same weight or urgency as others. Because the project isn’t particularly experimental, the creativity of the production can sometimes come across as “safe” rather than pushing boundaries. Nonetheless, Raekwon’s classic approach is comforting in a landscape that often favors flashy experimentation.
More often than not, we don’t get albums with boom-bap and soul executed correctly. Raekwon, being a legend, reminds us that he can still hang with the best of them any day. His ability to stay true to his roots while maintaining relevance in today’s music scene is commendable.
Ultimately, The Emperor’s New Clothes is worth your time if you appreciate lyricism, storytelling, and the classic sound of hip-hop.
