I’ve said this before, for sure on my Intrusive Thoughts 1 review, I like Mozzy a lot. But sometimes his beat choices keep a song from connecting for me, even when the lyrics and flow are on point. I need hard-hitting beats. Sometimes we get that, and sometimes Mozzy likes to catch a vibe more. It’s worked for him so far and certain days I love those songs, but other days it’s too moody for me.
This continues to be the strategy of past Mozzy projects. Thumping moody tracks with occasional melodic hooks. Mozzy stays true to himself no matter the sound or realm the song is in, which I appreciate. Even when certain songs or beats aren’t for me, I continue to come back. As an emcee I’m in on Mozzy.
To be fair, this album blends that mood and the banging beats better than some of the last projects in my opinion. A song like CAN’T SAVE ME with DCMBR is a great example of that. Plus, tracks like 4 A NECKLACE, STUTTER with Nardo Wick and SUPER SOAKER with Boosie all bang!
Mozzy has a unique sound to people not familiar with the Northern California rap scene. For locals and those in the know, the introspective lyrics, snapping snares and short bass cracks are truly a regional staple. Longevity in the commercial lane might be evasive, but the supporters who rock with Mozzy appreciate the authenticity and home-grown sound.
I think this is a slight step up from Intrusive Thoughts 1. Still not fully what I wish we’d get from Mozzy, but this project is a bit better of a blend of Mozzy’s signature moody style and the hard-hitting songs I like from him. A few more songs that leaned into the sound I like, especially at the end, would have bumped this up a little more for me.
