Album Review: Juicy J – Head On A Swivel

Three Decades of Consistency: No Expiration Date

At this point in the game, Juicy J is three decades in and shows no sign of slowing down or musically aging out of touch. With his latest release, “Head On A Swivel,” the Three 6 Mafia mastermind continues his streak of consistency, playing to his strengths: hard-hitting production, relevant features, and simple yet cohesive lyrics.

“Matter of fact, get you some money; we not talking if you broke.” Juicy makes it clear that money and success should be the motivation, and throughout this project, he continues to reiterate those sentiments. While you’re not going to get anything groundbreaking lyrically, the themes of motivation and simply living life to the fullest have become staples with any Juicy J album, and there is no change here. Significant features from Wiz Khalifa, Denzel Curry, Project Pat, OJ the Juicemane and newcomer G9ngster B9by all flow seamlessly with Juicy J’s signature production style and flow.

Production-wise, you get what you expect from a veteran and accomplished producer. The project is littered with soul samples and thumping, head-nodding beats. While you won’t hear much experimentation, the cohesion of each track is flawless. Each song flows effortlessly into the next while not sounding stale or repetitive. My one complaint is that, despite the new industry standard of 2 minutes per song, some of the tracks seem to fade out suddenly, leaving the listener wanting a second verse. Even by today’s standards, some of the songs are extremely short, which often doesn’t fit with the production style.

All in all, while there is nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary about the album, this project should find its place solidly in one’s rotation. Juicy J has shown he knows his niche and strengths and leans into them well, providing a solid listening experience. When it comes to letting the windows down and cruising the strip on a cool summer night, accept no substitutes… now “play me some pimpin’, mane.”

Standout Tracks: “Make it Home (Ft. Project Pat)” “A Lot (Ft. G9ngsta B9by)” “Let’s Go (Ft. Wiz Khalifa)“
