Album Review – YoungBoy Never Broke Again – DESHAWN

Expectedly Underwhelming

I tried a few weeks back to get through YoungBoys Make America Slime Again, and I just couldn’t. It was literally 3 times longer than this, and I got a few tracks deep and just decided why suffer through it at the time? But I also didn’t like the theme he was going for and it started off really rough, but I figured when I saw this releasing I’d give NBA another shot. As someone that’s generally not tuned in or kept up much with YoungBoy, I’ve been interested what an album would sound like if it appealed to me.

Unfortunately for the 2nd time in 2025 I just can’t get into YoungBoy Never Broke Again. I finished DESHAWN multiple times unlike MASA, but just generally this wasn’t music for me. I thought NBA gets into singing too often and didn’t find it to be very enjoyable very often. It’s all auto tuned and heavily affected, weaves in and out of being understandable and incoherent from song to song and just feels like I can get a better version from other artists. All that said, at its best, NBA was surprisingly good compared to his worst moments. If that makes sense.

Rap wise, I see a bit more of what people like. Personally, I still don’t think YoungBoy has the style, flows and schemes that match up with my tastes and sensibilities. Similarly to the singing, I think the best moments are good, but also feel good because of the bad it’s stacked next to. I think lyrically he’s “fine” for what he does I guess, but sometimes fine is bad and in this case, it lines up to be so. It’s really the delivery that makes it all fall apart for me at the end of the day especially.

I try artists that are new to me or I’m less knowledgeable about. I try to give everything a fair shake until it’s unbearable. It doesn’t happen often and even though I thought there were some moments on DESHAWN I didn’t hate, I just don’t know if I can do anymore YoungBoy. Maybe if he drops something everyone raves about I’ll check it out but until then I think I might pass of future projects. Oh, and I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Khaled be involved, and simultaneously less involved in something. Him being on here is completely useless.
