Single Review: Drake Feat. Julia Wolf & Yeat – Dog House

Purebred Expectations–Mutt Reality

Admittedly, the “rage” sound in hip-hop hasn’t been my favorite subgenre of the current hip-hop trend, which is headlined by artists like Yeat, who is featured on this single. However, I believe that good music is simply good music, and while I have found some of the rage tracks enjoyable—particularly those with knocking beats—this Drake-headlined single simply doesn’t fit into that category.

The song starts off interestingly enough, with Julia Wolf providing a grunge-reminiscent acoustic intro (needless to say, this is probably the best part of the listening experience), then makes a smooth 180 into a bass-thumping beat with Drake delivering the opening verse. Unfortunately, this is definitely not his best work. He seems to throw out random euphemisms, with the occasional “yeah, yeah” tossed in between the sometimes-rhymed bars. While I understand that this song is clearly made for pure vibes and energy, I expected a bit more from the 38-year-old veteran who was once known for his lyrical prowess. Yeat brings it home with the closing verse, and it’s clear that this style is more in his wheelhouse. However, the collaboration overall feels forced, like a Yeat song that Drake somehow found his way onto.

Overall, coming off the criticisms surrounding the Kendrick beef, these types of tracks don’t strengthen Drake’s case for reclaiming his spot in the hip-hop ecosystem. At this point, it would be more refreshing to hear hip-hop-laden or even melodic tracks, which Drake has essentially mastered. This seems more like an appeal to a younger hip-hop audience and falls flat as a single. I don’t see this one making it onto the playlists of many Drake fans or even rage-rap enthusiasts.
