Album Review – Tyrese – Painfully Beautiful

Undeniable Sonic Soul

I like R&B, but admittedly, I don’t listen to it much. It’s just a rarer mood for me sonically. However, I saw Tyrese had dropped a new album, so I decided to give it a spin and see what I thought. Well, I didn’t turn it off! Even though it turned out this was essentially the same album as last year’s release with only a few extras, I’m still giving it a fair shot, haha. I haven’t seen any of the latest videos or drama—this review is all about the music!

I may not be a huge R&B fan, but of course, I know Tyrese and TGT, which is why this album caught my attention in the first place. It’s filled with great music and impressive singing—what more can I say? Across the album, Tyrese sings his heart out and lays it all on the line, as you’d hope and expect. He’s a known talent, and his vocals still shine. The backdrop is draped in beautiful tunes.

As for my critiques, the album is a bit long for me at over an hour and a half with 20 songs. Even an hour is fine, but over 1.5 hours feels excessive. The original album was nearly that long too. I recognize this comes after a nine-year hiatus, so I understand to a degree, but it’s less excusable for a “deluxe” version. “Painfully Beautiful Pt. 1” is the only song I can say I didn’t like. It’s very poppy and doesn’t fit the rest of the album at all.

I’m basing this review purely on the music, and it’s a really good to great album, depending on your tastes. Tyrese is somewhat undeniable. A few minor flaws and the fact that it’s a rerelease knock it down a bit, and it’s definitely a mood-specific album, not a daily listen. Assuming Tyrese’s next album isn’t another rerelease of this one, I’ll definitely tune in.
