Personal Moments and Filler Flaws: The Uneven Return of Young Thug

Young Thug came home from fighting a hard case, and everyone expected the music to start rolling out. Instead of music, though, we got drama, phone leaks, and basically everything except new songs. UY SCUTI had been announced and pushed back to the point that I wasn’t sure it would actually drop this year, at least. But the pot bubbled to the point where there was nothing to do but drop an album. Will it be good enough to wash away all the crap? In 2025, it’s possible to do for the masses, but let’s see.
Starting off with “Ninja,” it’s already an average song at best, and then Thug takes a turn on the track that just absolutely ruins it. You know what I’m talking about. “Yuck” wasn’t a good track for me, fitting with Ken Carson as the feature because I’ve yet to find anything from him I fully enjoy. “On The News” was the first song I thought was solid, but still, the vibe wasn’t my style. “Catch Me I’m Falling” is similar; I like Thug getting personal, and there’s a decent chunk of sadder and more personal songs here. The two I mentioned, “Blaming Jesus,” “Sad Spider,” “Invest Into You,” “Dreams Rarely Do Come True,” and “Miss My Dogs,” all fit that mold. As much as I like Thug leaning into this on some of these songs, there are probably a few too many, and a few too many songs in total here.
“Whoopty Doo” unfortunately doesn’t live up to the viral edit that circles around, so that’s a miss. I wish he would have teamed up with whoever made that. There was a run of decent enough songs with “RIP Big & Mack,” “I’m So Dope,” and “Pardon My Back” to a lesser extent. But then “Mami” was terrible. I like “ass” and female rappers like that, but Sexyy Red just doesn’t do it for me. All the best songs were toward the end, and there weren’t that many: “Walk Down” and “Pipe Down,” which is one of those things I hate—songs with very similar titles next to each other, ha. It doesn’t affect the score or anything, just a minor thing.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of stuff on this hits around average or slightly below. Not to say there’s nothing good here, but mixed with the length, there are just a few too many things kind of working against it. Like everything, I can see this being over-hated and even over-praised by others. I’d say there’s enough here that Thug can follow up on, and if the next project is better, he’ll continue to recover his image. But to me, this doesn’t live up to previous projects or have the sonic impact.
Standout Tracks: “Catch Me I’m Falling,” “I’m So Dope,” “Walk Down”
