A Focused And Flawless Ode to Mary Jane

This is Vic Spencer’s second release this year, after the great Interstate Potluck with Bucky Luger. This time around, Vic is focused on one of the loves of his life—something I can relate heavily to—Mary Jane. Trees Are Undefeated is an homage to the magical plant and everything surrounding it: good times, a few hard times, plugs, and much more. If you’re a sticky-fingered MF, start this as you continue reading this write-up. It’s like that.
There are a lot of fake smokers out there, or at least people who don’t have the lungs they want you to think they do. Vic is not that. He’s the real deal, and if you follow him, you know he practices what he preaches on Trees Are Undefeated. He breaks down every track like a fresh bud. Explaining what he rolls and even grinds with on “Militant Gram Gods,” and describing bud and the process of breaking it down like Vic is talking about a woman on “If Trees Wore Leggings Pt. 3” is great. The way Vic plays with words here feels especially impressive. Only a veteran smoker and rapper can maintain one topic and keep it so interesting. Vic is to weed what Pusha T is to coke here on Trees Are Undefeated.
Every feature shows up, but Vic pulled out some special names here: Panamera P, Quelle Chris, Raz Fresco, and Cavalier to name a few. All the beats here feel perfect for the mood; the sound Vic Spencer curated from all these different producers feels laid back and super smooth. But they’re not simple beats either—the songs are filled with musicality, which is needed, and Vic flips raps, harmonies, and melodies left and right. “Oven Lungs” was a standout early on, and then I saw it was a Futurewave beat. Such a great combo.
I still have more Vic Spencer discography to catch up on, but this is probably my favorite project yet. Sharp rhymes, witty bars, dope beats, high-end features, and to top it off, it’s all a beautiful ode to an amazing plant. Focused and clear, this is a stoner’s anthem album. One that deserves to be held high and sit up with other top albums in this vein. I could take one of these albums from Vic every year, easy!
