Passion, Soul, and Flow: Why Yonny Is Your Next Favorite Rapper

One day I tweeted out, “If you get your algorithm right musically, it will give you great stuff in return.Yonny is one of the artists I discovered that day, and when I delved deeper into what the algorithm gave me, I wasn’t disappointed! Yonny raps, he sings, and he does it with passion, soul, and a high level of talent. “Everywhere, But Always” is proof of that.

As things begin, you immediately get a sense of the type of musicality and versatility that this album provides. As horns blow and the piano rings, Yonny starts singing and then seamlessly builds into more of a rap before transitioning into different flows—a great progression! “Bad Credit” follows up with Yonny really flexing his vocals on the hook before breaking down the verses with vulnerable and insightful thoughts. This is a theme that continues through this small but impactful project.

There are no features here; Yonny is holding things down alone. And he doesn’t need the help, given his vocal and rapping flexibility. He has a voice better than some of the biggest stars that cross the genres. Across “Blue Door” to “Women n’ Weed,” he’s created a focused sound and style that’s hard not to love. The only song I was slightly less into personally was “Summertime Madness.” It wasn’t a bad song at all, just one that pushed the genre in a way that wasn’t for me personally.

Yonny was a great random find and someone I’m happy to spread the word about as much as I can. He’s someone who would absolutely make my “20 Best Rappers Under 20” list for next year and would have made this year’s list had I found him before. I highly recommend “Everywhere, But Always,” and now I’ll have to get into the deluxe!

Standout Tracks: Anywhere, But Always, Bad Credit, Blue Door, Hood Spiritual
