Another Chicago Contender

Joel Q is a relatively new name to me, but that doesn’t mean he’s a new MC. He has years of experience, and his talent is unmistakable when you listen. A rising star in Chicago, he’s poised to gain even more recognition once the spotlight hits the city. Take This With You is a focused, almost intense project that takes you deep into Joel Q’s life.

Honor the OGs, The One, God’s Favorite, and God Flow are all great songs that usher you into the album. However, Domino Effect was the first to stand out, particularly due to Joel Q’s storytelling and the vivid picture he paints. In this song, Joel recounts a college dream deferred. Then there’s Land Safe, a deeply reflective track about close friends and a situation involving someone who gained traction in the industry.

Joel Q showcases a variety of styles, demonstrating his high skill level across them all. There are darker songs like Give It Away, more aggressive and fast-paced tracks like Just Do It, optimistic tracks like Perfect for a Day, and even a bit of a bop with 2000s Party. There are no weak songs here, but my favorites include Honor the OGs, Domino Effect, Give It Away, Perfect for a Day, and Just Do It.

I recently shared a handful of albums with a friend who claimed he hadn’t found any new artists he liked. Looking for “lyrical and good songwriting,” I included Joel Q’s album in the mix. A few hours later, I got a response: “Joel Q is incredible.” I agreed. Joel Q has invested time in both music and life, and the way he blends the two in Take This With You is impressive, delivering a project you absolutely need to check out!
