Halloween Week – Album Review – D12 – Devil’s Night

A Spooky Side Quest

I grew up basically into anything Dr. Dre was attached to, even just slightly, and that, of course, overflowed into Eminem and, more importantly for this review, D12. I’ve loved D12 my entire life, and that includes Devil’s Night. The album is titled after a night of mischief the day before Halloween, often called Devil’s Night in Detroit. So, I figured it was a fitting time to revisit this album from one of hip-hop’s iconic yet, in my opinion, underrated groups.

Production on this album is largely handled by Eminem, but there are healthy doses of Dr. Dre and Kuniva, a producer who doesn’t get the recognition he probably deserves. It sticks to a grim and bleak sound mostly, clearly a style I’ve been into my entire life. That said, not everything here is perfect. “It Ain’t Nothin’ But Music” and, to a lesser extent, “Blow My Buzz” are two beats I was never a big fan of, and I feel the same now.

D12 works well in this lane, kind of weaving in and out of horrorcore. Not everyone would agree they even fit that lane, I’m sure, but it’s on the edge at least. With multiple MCs, their clear sense of humor, and their lyrical ability, they create both hits like “Purple Pills” (Purple Hills radio edit) and dark moments like “American Psycho.” Detroit rappers have never been scared to embrace this vibe. It’s always great to hear Proof—RIP—and I was always a big fan of Swifty McVay, my favorite outside of Eminem. His performance on “Instigator” (where he’s also the hook) lives forever in my head.

I love and miss this movement of a huge star also being a member of a group that gets elevated. It doesn’t happen as often in 2025, at least not in the same way. This isn’t a perfect album, but I think it’s a somewhat forgotten gem, as crazy as that sounds given its connection to Eminem. I know D12 isn’t fully a thing anymore, and Eminem seems to have moved on, but similarly to their Aftermath brothers at G-Unit, I’d love a full reunion and album. What can I say?

Standout Tracks: Shit Can Happen, Pistol Pistol, Instigator & Revelations
