The often-overlooked and low-key member of the legendary LOX, Sheek Louch, has returned this year to drop the 7th installment in his annual series of Halloween-themed albums, Gorillaween. While the project is more reminiscent of an EP, as he usually keeps these releases to around seven or eight tracks, the veteran always manages to, at a minimum, keep it memorable with hellfire rhymes that match the dark imagery of the accompanying skits and snippets. This year is no different, offering another solid release.

“Nights Like This” immediately sets the tone, with Sheek announcing his displeasure with the current state of events while launching shots at “fronters,” fakers, and “old heads suffering [from] 2nd childhood disorder,” all delivered over a nodding beat. This pretty much sums up the overall feeling of the album: it’s filled with grown-man O.G. “get off my lawn” energy backed up by lyrical prowess throughout the short project.

As is to be expected with any D-Block project, the lyrics and rhymes are always on point, and this album is no exception. The crew-assisted “Gorilla Season,” featuring Nino Man, Tony Moxberg, and fellow LOX alum Styles P, is a testament to the fact that you won’t get any weak rhyme-spitters in the booth with the LOX. This song serves as one of the best on the project. My one gripe is that at times, Sheek does get a bit too preachy, braggadocious, or frustrated old-head; I can’t count the number of times I heard the term “YN” (Young N****) on the short project.

To sum things up, holiday-themed albums can either be dope or corny. The fact that Sheek has not only kept this series going up to the 7th volume but has also kept it true to himself and solid is a testament to his consistency. This project should provide a solid soundtrack to anyone’s Halloween festivities.

Standout Tracks: Nights Like This, Gorilla Season
