Concrete Boys Review: Great Beats Lost in a Sea of Sub-Par Rhymes

I’ve never been a fan of Lil Yachty. He seems like a nice enough guy, but his music has never done anything for me; normally, I wouldn’t tune in. However, Yachty was stirring up enough drama to promote this album that I felt I had to check it out.

To be clear, this isn’t a Lil Yachty solo album; it’s a Concrete Boys project. That said, Yachty acts as the frontman and appears on 12 out of 17 songs. He is arguably the least impressive member of the crew—especially considering his level of fame—but that’s a conversation for another day. The point is: the less Yachty and the more of the other members we get, the better the music becomes. Unfortunately, I don’t find the rest of the Concrete Boys particularly impressive either. Lyrically and technically, there is nothing here that feels new or appeals to my sensibilities. And this isn’t an “old head” critique; Yachty and I are actually fairly close in age.

There is nothing notable here regarding content, and the album lacks direction and focus. While there are good moments, beats, and verses, they are scattered and smashed between a lot of filler—largely due to Yachty. A few tracks stood out to me, specifically “CRETE CIPHER INTRO,” “WEIGH MY OPTIONS,” “TRUST ME,” “TOP OPTION BOYZ,” “RACE TO AN M,” and “BREAK THE BANK.” Unfortunately, being a “standout” doesn’t mean I loved the song. Almost none of these are great from front to back, though they were enjoyable to a degree.

Overall, this was a rough listen. I enjoy many different styles within Hip-Hop, but the lyrics, rhymes, and flows here didn’t do enough to carry the spotty production. On top of that, there is a “Lil Yachty anchor” holding everything back that needs to be cut loose. They won’t do it because he is the group, but I don’t see this ship moving or making real waves as long as that anchor is down.

Standout Tracks: CRETE CIPHER INTRO, WEIGH MY OPTIONS, TRUST ME, TOP OPTION BOYZ, RACE TO AN M & BREAK THE BANK
