Higher Standards: Tony Yayo Exceeds Expectations with a Solid 4/20 Soundtrack

Released April 13th 2026
I’m not sure when the last time I heard a full Tony Yayo album was. I’ve been a massive G-Unit fan for years, and while I’ve always liked Yayo, I was never the biggest fan of his actual rapping. It’s been many years since Thoughts of a Predicate Felon, and right before the holiday, Tony dropped The 4:20 Tape. As it provides the soundtrack for The Unit dispensary, I couldn’t pass it up.
I’ve said this about other artists, and it holds true for Tony Yayo as well: I’m not sure if he has actually gotten better or if my taste has just changed, but this is some of the best Tony Yayo I can remember. It might not have a hit like “So Seductive,” but from start to finish, this is solid. I was a bit mixed on “Boxes” because of the beat, yet Yayo sounded good on it. I genuinely like hearing him rap about weed, dabs, the dispensary, and traveling. That’s his real life in 2026, and you can’t hate on that. “So High,” “Smoking Gas,” “Block Work,” and “Where’s The Blunt” make for my favorite run of tracks, but overall, this is an easy listen for some 4/20 tunes.
The production is where I’m most mixed on this project—specifically on “Boxes,” “She Wanna Get High,” and “Smalls & Depths.” Even then, I liked the direction Tony took the songs. He got melodic at times, and for this style, it surprisingly worked for me. “Kill Em With Success,” “I Woke Up Today,” and “30 Cent A Bag” are another run of songs I really like to close the project out. I know Wiz was in the mix here, but this made me want a Tony Yayo & Curren$y collab project—maybe something like The First 28 with Styles P.
I went into this unsure of what to expect. Like I said, I was never the biggest Yayo fan, and a weed mixtape with what seems to be an AI cover had me nervous. All that said, Tony Yayo exceeded my expectations, and I do recommend checking this out for a quick 4/20 listen!
