Artist Name: Bobby Pillows (aka Donny Yonder from Donny and the Beatchef)

Hometown: Originally from Welland, Ontario; residing in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick

From the rugged landscapes of New Brunswick to the grit of his Ontario roots, Bobby Pillows (also known as Donny Yonder) has spent over a decade cementing his place in the Canadian underground. As one-half of the duo Donny and the Beatchef, Pillows has mastered the art of “Lifestyle Rap,” blending anti-establishment lyricism with the raw, rhythmic energy of traditional Boom Bap. In this exclusive sit-down, he reflects on his early days in Welland, the influence of hip-hop legends like Shabazz the Disciple, and the milestone of finally seeing his latest solo project, A Rebel and a Blunt, spinning on vinyl.

Q: Can you tell us about your background? Where did you grow up, and how has that influenced your music?

A: I grew up in Welland, Ontario. There wasn’t much to do there, but you could always catch us in the park freestyling over beatboxing. There was always a great music scene in Welland; although it was mostly hardcore and punk, we introduced hip-hop with a live band and it was warmly welcomed.

Q: What was your early introduction to hip-hop? Do you have any specific artists or experiences that inspired you?

A: I grew up listening to Shabazz the Disciple, The Roots, Jeru the Damaja, and Duke Ellington. Shabazz, Jeru, and Black Thought are probably my biggest musical influences from my youth. As for experiences—all my homies bumped hip-hop. We would even steal a car and drive two hours to go see a Boot Camp Clik show if we had to (and we had to, lol).

Q: When did you start making music, and what was your first project?

A: I started making music in 2009 with a live hip-hop band called Black Majik Movement. Our very first project was called Past Expiration. Shortly after that, I started the band Donny Yonder with Caleb Moroz and a few other great musicians. Around that same time, we formed Donny and the Beatchef, a hip-hop duo with producer Rsonal the Beatchef. My latest project is my first solo album, where I perform under the name Bobby Pillows and have full creative control.

Q: How would you describe your style and sound? What sets you apart?

A: My style is best described as “old school,” like my influences, although I tend to switch my rhyme style to cater to the beat. The production varies from traditional Boom Bap to more modern, bouncy, energetic beats with heavy bass. We stay true to who we are and make the music we love. The lyrics are a mix of anti-establishment themes and good old-fashioned fun.

Q: What role does your hometown play in your artistry? Are there any local influences you incorporate into your work?

A: My hometown gave me the support and the means to start making music. I was always surrounded by multi-talented people. The homies in Niagara are some of the best emcees in Canada; I love working with them on the projects we put out. Welland also gave me enough crazy stories to rap about for the rest of my life.

Q: How do you promote your music and connect with your audience? Do you have any tips for other independent artists?

A: My advice for other indie artists is: please don’t lose the love for the music while trying to get noticed. Remember why you started and what it’s for. Don’t let anyone take the joy from your journey. I’ve seen too many artists quit due to the overwhelming frustration of trying to navigate the industry.

Q: What has been your proudest moment in your music career so far?

A: I’ve had many equally great moments—playing parties and festivals, building with other artists, and winning awards. Something exciting recently is that I had the Bobby Pillows album, A Rebel and a Blunt, pressed to vinyl. I can finally spin my own record.

Q: Can you tell us about your latest project? What can fans expect?

A: The Bobby Pillows album, A Rebel and a Blunt, goes crazy. It’s got banger beats and bars, complete with catchy hooks. It’s old school with a new school twist—we flip it like you’ve never heard before. Check out the song “Old Crackers” on any streaming platform to get a vibe for the album.
