Album Review – JPEGMAFIA – EXPERIMENTAL RAP

“Spitting Through the Static: My Take on JPEGMAFIA’s EXPERIMENTAL RAP”

A diverse group of individuals dressed in black bodysuits stands in formation, with one person in the front wearing sunglasses and a coat, creating a striking visual contrast.

This isn’t my first JPEGMAFIA album, but it is the first one I’ve ever written a review for. I’ve never been his biggest fan, but I’ve always enjoyed a good amount of what he makes.

I’ve been surprised by how mixed the reactions to this album have been. To me, it feels like two simple truths should be kept in mind: 1) if you’re already into JPEGMAFIA, this project shouldn’t shock or disappoint you, and 2) the album is literally called EXPERIMENTAL RAP.

What I appreciate most is how much JPEGMAFIA actually raps here. Too often, music labeled as “experimental hip-hop” skimps on actual rapping or lyrical focus. From start to finish, though, JPEGMAFIA is spitting with energy and intent. It’s a dense, unorthodox style that some listeners might find off-putting, but I enjoy it. His blend of sharp lyrical content, delivered with impressive consistency and intensity, kept me locked in throughout.

Where I connect a little less is with some of the production choices. I’m not the biggest fan of hip-hop heavily blending with metal, rock, and noise-leaning genres. That said, JPEGMAFIA pulls it off better than most. The foundation of hip-hop samples and melodic elements helps anchor the album in familiar territory while still pushing boundaries and expanding the sound. At times I wished the vocals sat a bit louder in the mix so they weren’t quite as buried under the beats, but I understand the artistic choice. There are a few moments and beat switches I’m less fond of, but nothing strong enough to make me skip tracks.

It feels like too many people formed their final opinion after just one listen. That’s understandable—if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. Still, I can’t shake the feeling that JPEGMAFIA’s recent comments and public issues with other artists have created extra backlash that this album doesn’t fully deserve. That’s unfortunate, because this is a strong, forward-thinking project that fans who crave something outside the norm should be supporting and celebrating.
