Soulful, Authentic, and Just Shy of Impressive

Released May 29th 2026
When Young M.A first hit the scene, I wasn’t really that into the wave, admittedly. “OOOUUU” wasn’t a song I loved, even though there were some remixes I enjoyed; point being, I never tuned into Young M.A’s debut album or any subsequent projects. Well, after a multi-year break, Young M.A is back with plenty to get off her chest!
Young M.A has a lot to say and isn’t holding back on Kween. Starting with the first track, “Therapy – Intro,” Young M.A opens the book on her life and doesn’t close it until the album concludes. Across the project, on songs like “Therapy,” “Open Scars,” “Hennessy Medusa,” and more, she speaks on her mom helping her get her career started and encouraging her music, addiction, friends and loved ones leeching, and, of course, the loss of her brother. The personal touches are what give this album some much-needed soul, even if they aren’t all my favorite songs.
One thing I can say about Young M.A is that she’s authentically herself. Never shying away from her street roots and stud talk, like her or not, Young M.A keeps it a buck. She is a good rapper, but not always one that I find impressively good. The flows and rhymes are solid, and there’s some good bar work, but the delivery and style just leave me wanting more. I’d say my favorite songs here are “Pressure,” “Lasagna,” and especially “Gyal Dem Ryte”—a song where it felt like Young M.A really projected her voice and leveled things up, alongside the amazing sample, of course.
This album is good, just not fully for me. Even though Young M.A has grown on me over the years, I still can’t say I really enjoy her style like that. When the energy and delivery turn up, so does my interest, but those moments are just a bit too few and far between.
