Recently, it became clear that Conway the Machine was working on new music, dropping snippets and clips to get people excited. Then he started unrolling this mixtape, I HEARD YOU PAINT HOUSES. First five tracks were out, then 10, and then finally I saw him announce that the full project with 16 tracks was live. That was my cue to tune in! Conway The Machine is arguably my favorite original Griselda member, and last year’s YOU CAN’T KILL GOD WITH BULLETS was a hit, so needless to say, I was excited to dig into this mixtape.

Now, this truly is a mixtape, which I love. Conway is rapping over beats from songs old and new, bringing his own unique take to them. It’s a project style seen less often in 2026, but one I’m always a fan of. He chops it up over classic production like Clipse’s “Chains & Whips,” Kendrick Lamar’s “TV Off,” Eminem’s “I Just Don’t Give A Fuck,” Freddie Gibbs’ “1985,” and many more. DJ Whoo Kid does a great job holding things down, too—he stays out of the way of the music and never feels obnoxious.

Conway lyrically dissects every single instrumental, bringing a wide range of content and deep insight into his thoughts and feelings. Never one to shy away from getting personal, he keeps that same energy here. “EMOTIONLESS” uses Drake’s beat of the same title, finding Conway reflecting on his relationships with women and friends, asking, “Who helps the man that helps everybody?” It’s a feeling many of us know all too well. Meanwhile, “FREE” is easily the most notable track on the project. Conway speaks candidly on his frustrations with the music industry: “I used to want the rap glory now all I want is my piece. Dinner with Hov he told dog give your brother a piece. I seen it in his eyes right then he don’t want me to eat.” Damn. He gets as deep as ever across the entirety of “FREE,” breaking down multiple heavy situations.

Conway The Machine pretty much always delivers for me, and I HEARD YOU PAINT HOUSES didn’t let me down. The classic mixtape format, combined with the balance of street and conscious content, just works perfectly. Hopefully, this isn’t the last we hear from Conway in 2026, but if it is, this will easily hold me over until the next official album!
