When Boldy James drops, I’m always excited, and when he is dropping with a producer like Nicholas Craven, that excitement goes up another notch. This is only Boldy James’s second solo project of the year, and I’ve been ready and waiting for more. So, when Trapper’s Alley 3: Hell or High Water was released, you better believe I hit download immediately.

Like the duo’s recent releases, this project features a very elegant and beautiful beat selection. Nicholas Craven’s ability to craft these absolutely stunning beats never ceases to amaze. It’s a production style that, as great as it is, not every MC can pull off; Boldy James, however, certainly can. His calm voice and smooth flows not only fit the style but masterfully control it, too.

This is easier said than done. I’ve heard plenty of rappers on production in this vein (although rarely at Craven’s level), and it doesn’t always grab my attention the same way. I also appreciate Boldy James frequently shining a light on lesser-known artists, a trend that continues here. 218bojay, Chip$, Lethalias Grain, and Dave Hill are all new to me, and it’s dope that they all got a chance to shine.

Boldy James is a master of street-oriented content, bringing life and unique perspectives into the mix. This is part of what makes him such a compelling MC. As is the case with most of my favorite artists, his solo songs are often my top tracks, and Boldy is no exception. Summer’s EveMy Last TryFalse Accusations, and Grinding My Gears all feature standout samples that elevate the tracks as Boldy James absolutely bodies each one.

Outside of the solo cuts, Mama Maxine and Powerhouse are both great tracks that bring in some of those fresh names, who hold their own alongside a top-tier lyricist like Boldy. What can I say? As a huge Boldy James fan, I’m highly satisfied with Trapper’s Alley 3: Hell or High Water. There are a few beats that don’t catch my ear quite like the rest, and I generally prefer fewer features, but this project is still undeniably dope. It’s hard for me not to be sold on a Boldy James and Nicholas Craven collaboration; Concreatures out there already know that this is an album that simply has to be heard.
