Florida Heat, Ice-Cold Flows

Ice Jackson is a multitalented artist out of Tallahassee—not only an MC, but also a comedian and entrepreneur. Don’t get it twisted, though: Ice Jackson delivers Florida heat and ice-cold flows simultaneously. The Flu stands for Florida Life Understood, a theme that carries multiple layers of meaning throughout the album.

Ice Jackson brings a bouncy, fluid style that extends beyond his production choices into his flows and rhymes. The result is a strong southern bounce that lands effectively. As the title suggests, The Flu explores how Florida life can often feel toxic, pushing people toward a pursuit of hedonism that spreads among residents much like a virus. It’s a sharp concept, and Ice Jackson executes it well.

The album maintains a high level of consistency from start to finish, with only one real hiccup. While experimentation is always welcome, “Southside Overdrive” simply didn’t land for me—neither the genre shift nor the execution worked. Outside of that track, Ice Jackson rips through each song bar by bar. He covers a range of topics across cuts like “Sunpass,” “Uncle Mike,” “Free Lunch,” “All I Know,” and others, nearly all of which circle back to the central idea of The Flu. Some of my personal favorites include “Whose Car We Gonna Take,” “Stretch,” “The Flu,” “You Can’t Touch This,” and “Lil Ol’ Me.”

I first caught a track from Ice Jackson on the Hip-Hop High Society podcast and enjoyed it enough to add this album to my list. After hearing the full project, I like Ice and what he’s building even more. He’s not one to be taken lightly—he’s a serious MC who executed this concept with real skill.

Ice Jackson proves he’s a serious force with The Flu, delivering sharp concepts, strong execution, and a fresh Florida perspective that sticks with you long after the final track.
