Denaun’s Production & Rapsody’s Elite Flow

Rapsody, of course, is great—one of the most talented and praised MCs of current times. That said, some of her recent releases haven’t been my personal favorites, so I was semi-nervous going into her latest album, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops. But I’m very happy to say this is one of her best projects in years, or at least one of MY personal favorites for sure!

I’ve gotta start by saying the production here is immaculate. It’s rich with influences, with the main backdrop being Africa and African culture, though it’s not strictly locked to that single theme. Real heads know Denaun is one of the best and most underrated producers in the game, and his work on this album never ceases to impress. His beats bring soul, love, and high energy, all wrapped within a culturally focused sound.

Matching that top-tier production, Rapsody brought her elite skill and talent to every level. Her energy was fully locked in—an element I felt was occasionally missing on past projects. There’s a fantastic balance here between her signature somber sound and brighter, bouncier tracks.

Much of this album delivers my favorite Rapsody material in years, including “Free Yo’ Mind,” “No Way,” “God Gotta Afro,” “OMG! (Love to Sun Ra),” “You! (DJ Whoo Kid Joint),” and “Black Is Beautiful.” All of these bring a faster pace than her other recent work, which actually made me appreciate the slower tracks like “Abandoned Me” even more. I’d say the only track I didn’t completely love is “Apple Juice”—even though I know a lot of people hold that as a personal favorite off the project.

This may end up being my favorite, or at least a top 2 or 3 album in Rapsody’s entire catalog. I’ll need a little more time to digest and revisit her older work before I lock that in 100%, but regardless, this album is amazing and an absolute must-listen this year. It once again proves why Rapsody is held in such high regard across Hip-Hop.
