Yeat’s 15-Minute Summer Capper Is His Most Solid Project Yet—If You Already Tolerate Him

I like Yeat alright—more so than some might think based on the scores and reviews I’ve given. But if I really didn’t like him, I wouldn’t keep coming back to check out new releases. After his 2-disc album ADL earlier this year, Yeat is back with an EP, COCOON. A quick 7-song, 15-minute project to cap off the summer for Yeat fans.

EARNËD IT starts off COCOON, a song I actually liked more than I expected going into the first track. Now if you dig into the lyrics, it’s a nothing burger, but it sounds good at least, lol. I can’t say the same for the next track, IN2THAT. It’s not offensively bad like the worst of Yeat can be at times, but it was an incredibly mediocre beat at best to me. MISS MY DAWG has the only feature on COCOON, with Drake. It’s a solid song, but it didn’t hit the level I kinda hoped it might. The sentiment behind the song is good, though—“put a light in the air if you miss your dawg.” A song I’m sure will be good for live performances.

LUH BIRK is very similar to EARNËD IT, except not as good. The beat was weaker, and so was Yeat himself. HOLY WATËR is probably my second favorite song after EARNËD IT. It’s just high energy and at least has Yeat rapping more instead of singing as much. That’s followed by COCOON, the last of the “standout tracks” for this EP. The production is hard-knocking, and I enjoyed what Yeat did on it overall. TËNNIS is the last song and, like IN2THAT, brings sounds and styles within the production that take me out of enjoying what is there. It’s also arguably the worst of Yeat’s flows and vocals on COCOON.

It’s hard to say this is my favorite Yeat project because of how short it is. But I think front to back, from what I’ve heard of Yeat, this might be the most solid. I can’t recommend this EP to anyone who’s not already interested in or tolerant of Yeat and his style. But at least I can say I didn’t hate COCOON.
