The Crossroads is the 3rd studio album from rapper Cordae coming off his his viral comments concerning the validity for first week sales as it pertains to the success of a project. While that particular topic is still up for debate, I can say as someone who previously would not describe myself as a fan after listening to the project I can say…probably still not a fan but I have a renewed respect for the young emcee.
Cordae sets the introspective tone of this project early with 06 Dreamin speaking of his upbringing and his mother’s own struggle trying to break into the “biz” while also managing the responsibility of child raising. This project pretty much carries that formula into painting a vivid picture into the past, mindset, triumphs, and struggles (and a few bragadocious moments) of the young rapper. While there are numerous star studded features on the album (Lil Wayne, Juicy J, Anderson.Paak, etc.) none of the collaborations feel forced and Cordae proves he can hold his own rhyming with some of the more established veterans in the game.
In closing, as opposed to many of the recent releases from many artists of this current generation, the cohesiveness of this project stands-out. For the most part, every tracks flows seamlessly into the next one, the theme of every song is evident, and the rhyming is top-notch. Definitely can hear the care taken with this project and the appeal can range from a fan of boom-bap to the more melodic tone of today’s hip-hop. You won’t find a song that’s clearly “skip button” worthy. All-in-all this project is worthy of a spot on your playlist and one of the best released this year.
